Dopamine Crystals
Dopamine Crystals
From microscopy to wearable design.
The chemistry behind the design
Dopamine, C₈H₁₁NO₂, is a naturally occurring molecule belonging to the catecholamine family. In the brain, it acts as a neurotransmitter a chemical messenger that helps nerve cells communicate. It plays an important role in motivation, reward-related learning and the control of movement. Often associated with pleasure, dopamine is also involved in anticipating rewards and directing effort towards a goal. It also functions as a neurohormone, helping regulate the release of prolactin.
A microscopic world, revealed through light
The design features a photograph of dopamine crystals captured under a polarized-light microscope by Karl Gaff. As polarized light travels through birefringent crystals, it interacts differently with their internal structure depending on direction. Viewed through an analyser, these differences produce interference colours that vary with the crystals’ thickness and orientation. The resulting image reveals intricate crystalline forms in vivid pinks, blues, golds and turquoise. These colours arise from the interaction between light and the crystals. What you see is a microscopic landscape formed by many molecules arranged together in crystals.
HELNIUM × Karl Gaff
Created through a collaboration between HELNIUM and Karl Gaff, this neck gaiter translates scientific photography into wearable design. Karl’s expertise in photomicrography reveals the crystalline detail, while the collaborative design brings that imagery onto fabric.
