Mineral Metamorphosis | C₆H₈O₇ Citric Acid Print
Scientific Description
Citric acid (C₆H₈O₇) is a weak organic acid naturally found in citrus fruits. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, forming colourless or white crystals that are highly soluble in water. Beyond its chemical properties, citric acid plays a fundamental role in biology as the first major intermediate of the Krebs (citric acid) cycle, the central metabolic pathway responsible for cellular energy production. The cycle begins when acetyl-CoA combines with oxaloacetate to form citrate. Through a series of enzymatic reactions, citrate is progressively transformed while generating NADH, FADH₂, GTP (or ATP), and releasing carbon dioxide, providing the energy required for nearly all living organisms.
Artistic Vision
Mineral Metamorphosis is a poetic interpretation of personal transformation inspired by the life cycle of the butterfly. The artwork juxtaposes elegant mineral structures, with their metallic grey textures, against luminous blue and golden highlights reminiscent of butterfly wings unfolding into flight. This contrast symbolizes the passage from rigidity and stillness toward vitality, freedom, and renewal. The dense grey crystalline formations embody the chrysalis, the silent period of introspection where transformation quietly begins. The vibrant blue and golden accents represent awakening and emergence: blue reflects wisdom, inner reflection, and spiritual awareness, while gold symbolizes light, renewed energy, and the rediscovery of purpose. This artwork invites viewers to embrace change as an essential stage of growth. Moments of uncertainty, although often difficult, become the foundation upon which deeper strength and resilience are built. Mineral Metamorphosis captures that suspended moment when the past gently dissolves, allowing space for renewal, maturity, and a more authentic version of ourselves.
Ecological Perspective
This artwork also serves as a reflection on the ecological transition facing our civilization. In our pursuit of efficiency, performance, and control, modern society has often confused order with life itself, gradually distancing humanity from its deeper relationship with nature. Beyond its personal symbolism, Mineral Metamorphosiscan therefore be interpreted as an allegory for our environmental crossroads. The work contrasts two states of matter. Fragmented metallic grey regions evoke rigid technological systems approaching their limits, while vibrant crystalline colours suggest the possibility of a new equilibrium. These visual contrasts are not merely aesthetic, they mirror the environmental, energetic, and social challenges of our time. The fractures within the mineral structure become metaphors for systemic imbalance: climate change, biodiversity loss, and human disconnection from the living world. What appears at the microscopic scale reflects processes unfolding globally.
Dedication
Mineral Metamorphosis is deeply connected to the themes of personal transformation and inner revelation. It pays tribute to those remarkable individuals whose guidance becomes a catalyst for growth and self-discovery. This piece is especially dedicated to a chemistry teacher whose influence profoundly shaped my own journey. Through her unique combination of kindness, passion, and inspiring energy, she awakened within me a strength I never knew I possessed. During a period marked by uncertainty and personal transition, her presence became a guiding light, helping me discover my inner potential. Just as crystals capture and reveal light, her influence continues to illuminate my path and nurture my evolution today.
