Caffeine Crystals C₈H₁₀N₄O₂ | Acrylic panel with Wooden base

from CHF 29.00

Scientific Description : Crystallized Caffeine

This artwork presents needle crystals of pure caffeine, extracted in the laboratory from Glarner Kaffee coffee beans (Frauenfeld Roastery, Switzerland). Caffeine (C₈H₁₀N₄O₂), also known as 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine, is a naturally occurring purine alkaloid. In its pure state, it appears as a fine white crystalline powder. The molecule is planar and rigid, promoting highly directional molecular stacking during recrystallization. Within its monoclinic crystal system, growth occurs preferentially along one crystallographic axis, producing the characteristic long, needle-shaped crystals. Under polarized light microscopy, these crystals exhibit strong birefringence: their optical anisotropy splits light into two rays whose recombination generates brilliant interference colors. This phenomenon produces the striking blue-violet and golden hues, even though pure caffeine is naturally white. Biologically, caffeine acts primarily as an adenosine receptor antagonist, increasing alertness, attention, and wakefulness.
