The Science

This artwork originates from malonic acid (C₃H₄O₄), a simple organic molecule widely used in chemistry as a versatile building block for organic synthesis. Its well-defined molecular structure makes it an ideal system for studying crystal growth, molecular organization and intermolecular interactions. The crystals were photographed using polarized light microscopy, a technique capable of revealing structures invisible under conventional illumination. Observed between crossed polarizing filters and combined with a first-order λ (lambda) quartz retardation plate, the crystal interacts with polarized light to produce brilliant interference colors. No pigments, digital painting or artificial coloring have been added. Every color, every texture and every geometric feature is generated naturally through the interaction between light and the crystal itself.

Crystallized Elegance explores the fragile balance between order and chaos. Unlike minerals that may grow over thousands of years, these crystals formed rapidly under non-equilibrium conditions. As the solvent evaporates, millions of molecules organize themselves in real time, each seeking the most stable arrangement possible while continuously adapting to its surroundings. The result is neither perfectly ordered nor completely random. Sharp crystalline facets merge with flowing textures, creating a composition that evokes contemporary paintings, mineral landscapes and abstract frescoes.
