Alchemy of the Soul

Chemical Reaction

Reaction: NiSO₄ + 2 KSCN → Ni(SCN)₂ + K₂SO₄

A coordination complex forms when a central metal ion, such as Ni²⁺, binds to molecules or ions known as ligands. These ligands donate lone pairs of electrons to the metal, creating coordinate covalent bonds (also called dative bonds). Such complexes form because they stabilize the metal ion by maximizing electrostatic interactions and filling its available orbitals. In the case of Ni(SCN)₂, the thiocyanate (SCN⁻) ligands arrange themselves around the nickel ion to produce a geometry that is generally tetrahedral or square planar, giving rise to its characteristic yellow colour through electronic transitions caused by the interaction between the ligand field and the metal's d orbitals.

Artistic Vision

"The Alchemy of the Soul" tells the subtle and profound story of inner transformation, inspired by the ancient alchemical quest in which lead, ordinary and seemingly worthless matter, is transformed into gold. The grey crystals within the artwork symbolize our weaknesses, doubts, and hardships: the parts of ourselves that may appear fractured or incomplete. Yet through a slow and invisible process, represented here by polarized light, these grey regions reveal brilliant golden reflections, symbolizing renewal, transcendence, and inner awakening. This light, both scientific and spiritual, invites us to change our perspective. It reminds us that our struggles are not obstacles but the very foundation upon which greater strength and wisdom are built. Just as alchemy required patience and perseverance, personal transformation is a gradual journey where every fracture and every uncertainty can become a source of resilience. Within this work, gold symbolizes resilience and enlightenment, a version of ourselves refined through adversity. The crystals become a universal metaphor for humanity's ability to transform darkness into light and imperfection into nobility. Ultimately, this artwork reminds us of an essential truth: our strengths and our weaknesses together make us authentic. Gold could never exist without the grey that precedes it. Our imperfections do not diminish us, they shape us. They tell the story of a life in constant evolution, one that draws light from its deepest fractures to become stronger, wiser, and more genuine.

Scientific Perspective

Alchemy was an ancient discipline primarily devoted to the transmutation of metals, most famously the attempt to transform lead into gold. Far more than a material pursuit, it combined scientific experimentation with philosophy and spirituality. Its foundations rested upon three central ideas: transmutation, the search for the Philosopher's Stone, and the balance of opposites as the path toward harmony. From a scientific perspective, alchemy played a fundamental role in the development of modern chemistry, introducing essential laboratory techniques such as distillation, crystallization, and calcination. These early experiments greatly improved our understanding of matter and its physical and chemical transformations while laying the foundations of modern laboratory practice through the development of specialized glassware and experimental methods. Although often associated with mysticism, alchemy significantly contributed to the evolution of science by exploring the mechanisms through which matter transforms, while simultaneously leaving behind a symbolic legacy that continues to connect material transformation with human transformation.
